Henry Holt and Company has been publishing quality books since its founders, Henry Holt and Frederick Leypoldt, opened their doors on Broome Street in 1866. The partners were the first to focus exclusively on publishing, and not simultaneously operate a bookstore or a printing plant. They began with translations, including novels by Ivan Turgenev, and by 1876 had published more than three hundred trade titles and textbooks. A fruitful relationship with Robert Frost began in 1915 with the publication of the North of Boston. Frost’s books became a mainstay for the company and anchored a prestigious poetry list, with five collections eventually winning the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.
